The Department of Water and Meteorology has made public a detailed emergency action plan to minimize the loss of life and property due to potential disasters targeting the upcoming monsoon. The department has stated that it will operate 24-hour services throughout the monsoon period by making the weather forecast, flood forecast and early warning system effective. Acting Director General of the department Archana Shrestha informed that the Weather Forecasting Division and the Flood Forecasting Division will be active 24 hours a day. 'Regular weather forecasts for 3 days will be made public at 8:00 am and 6:00 pm daily, while in special situations, a special bulletin with warnings will be issued 3 to 5 days in advance,' she said. 'Warning maps with color indicators will also be published to provide timely information about hazardous weather conditions such as heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and snowfall.' According to Shrestha, data received from automatic water and weather measurement centers across the country will be made public in real time through the department's 'website'. The department has stated that flood forecasts will be issued 3 days in advance in the major rivers Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali, Bagmati, Babai and West Rapti to reduce flood risk. Arrangements have been made to provide information two to six hours in advance of sudden floods in small rivers and the department is preparing to issue forecasts five days in advance if there is a possibility of major floods across the country.
'The SMS system has been further strengthened to identify risky areas and provide advance warnings to the local level. Free messages will be sent to the general public, public representatives and stakeholders in the flood-affected areas through Nepal Telecom and Ncell,' Shrestha said. 'The department has stated that information related to floods (1155-2) and weather (1155-1) will be provided 24 hours a day throughout the monsoon period through the toll-free service number 1155. In addition, bulletins and warnings will be made public regularly on the official website, social media (X and Facebook) and via email.'
The department has stated that arrangements have been made to primarily inform the Ministry of Home Affairs, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, and the National Emergency Operations Center to make the early warning system effective. The department says that in special circumstances, a press release will be issued to alert the general public.
