Deputy Speaker Rubikumari Thakur has said that a clear message should be included in the wedding invitation card stating that ‘dowry-free marriage’.
She commented on the social media platform Facebook that most of the wedding cards she received did not mention this, saying that society has not yet been completely free from the dowry system.
She wrote, ‘Not only taking or giving dowry, but also accepting dowry-based marriages, participating in such programs or feasting are socially unacceptable and legally punishable practices. Such practices directly affect the respect, equality and rights of women.’
She has made it clear that she will not participate in dowry-based marriages and has urged everyone to practice dowry-free, equality-based and civilized marriages.
She has also requested that the wedding invitation card be sent with the message ‘dowry-free marriage, taking and giving dowry is a social and legal crime.’
