The 10th General Convention of the National Federation of the Disabled Nepal has elected a 35-member new leadership under the chairmanship of Devidatta Acharya. The convention has also issued a 38-point Butwal Declaration to be implemented in the next three years.
Amar Bahadur Gurung has been elected as the Senior Vice President, Shobha Karki as the Women's Vice President, Kumar Regmi as the General Secretary, Ashwin Lamsal as the Secretary, and Ramesh Kumar Basnet as the Treasurer from the general convention held in Butwal from the 27th to the 29th. Similarly, Meera Tamang, Puswin Khatri, Sunita Thapa, Arjun Rawal, Bhegikumari Pun Magar, Jhamka Prasad Gautam, Laxmi Kafle, Jagadish Prasad Aryal, Januka Rokka, Deepak Adhikari, and Surya Krishna Chaulagain have been elected as members.
Similarly, the election committee has stated that Nanda Raj Bhatta, Ichcha KC, Giridhari Subedi, Kashiram Neupane, Pushparaj Rimal, Dilkumari Devkota, Nathuni Halubai, Binita Kumari Yadav, Ramchandra Yadav, Sunita Tamang, Padam Bahadur Pun, Sita Bishwakarma, Parashuram Acharya, Netra Prasad Sapkota, Ramesh Pokharel, Kumar Poudel, Ramkrishna Neupane have been elected as members.
The general convention has decided to amend the statute from the upcoming general assembly to eliminate the interference of non-political characters and fraternal organizations of political parties and ensure that only those who are not active members of political parties or have left them will be allowed to come to the leadership level of the federation. Chairman Acharya said that the convention has issued a 38-point declaration to make the state and related bodies responsible for the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities for the next three years.
The issued manifesto includes policy reforms, accessibility and information technology, health, rehabilitation and assistive devices, education, employment and empowerment, institutional development and good governance, social justice and security, among other issues. He also said that the federation will focus purely on the rights and interests of persons with disabilities. 662 representatives from 424 disability-related organizations across the country participated in the convention. Some representatives at the convention venue also raised slogans and made noise, expressing dissatisfaction with the leadership selection. He said that they tried to make the federation purely apolitical, but there was some noise after representatives affiliated with various political parties tried to rebel.
Although according to the National Census 2078, 2.25 percent of the total population in Nepal are disabled, General Secretary Kumar Regmi said that the federation has more than 1.5 million disabled members in its statistics.
