Nepali Communist Party (NCP) leader and former Finance Minister Barshaman Pun has suggested that Prime Minister Balendra Shah take forward various development projects. Prime Minister Shah held discussions with members of the House of Representatives elected from Lumbini Province on Monday. Pun, who participated in the discussion, drew the Prime Minister's attention to prioritize the ongoing development projects and some new projects in Rolpa and Lumbini Provinces, where he was elected. Pun drew the Prime Minister's attention to immediately bringing the Bhairahawa Regional International Airport into operation. He stressed that there should be no delay in advancing diplomatic dialogue with India on air routes for operating international flights. "There should be no delay in opening the door to potential in the tourism sector by setting up a labor desk at Bhairahawa Airport and regularizing international flights," Pun said. "I would like to draw the Prime Minister's attention to taking diplomatic initiatives with India for international air routes."
Pun demanded to speed up the construction of the Shaheed Marg connecting Dolpa via Koilabas-Rolpa-Rukum in Dang. He said that the road, which touches the border of the northern neighbor China, has strategic importance. He urged to allocate budget for the upgrading of the Ghorahi-Holeri-Kalopetra section of the Shaheed Marg and from Sulichaur to Uwa in Rolpa. Pun also demanded the government to proceed with the work of the Madi Multipurpose Hydropower Project in Rolpa. The construction of the project, the construction framework of which was prepared with the joint investment of the government-owned Hydro Electricity and Investment Development Company Limited and the Power Construction Corporation of China, has been stopped.
Pun also emphasized the need to move forward with the Gandaki Economic Triangle Project, which was included in the budget for the fiscal year 081/82 when he was the Finance Minister. He said that if the triangle project could be moved forward in partnership with the private sector by keeping Bharatpur, Butwal and Pokhara at three angles to conduct a model development campaign according to the integrated development concept, a new economic center would be developed and it could play the role of a 'game changer' in the country's overall economy.
Under the triangle project, it was said that the Narayangadh-Butwal section would be developed as a center for construction materials and heavy industries, the Muglin-Pokhara section as a center for agriculture and food processing industries, and the Pokhara-Butwal section as a center for electrical appliances, footwear, clothing, carpets and household goods and services. Following the 7-point agreement between the Nepali Congress and the UML on the night of 2002, the KP Oli-led government, which replaced the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government, revised the budget and scrapped the Gandak Tribhaj project. Similarly, Pun suggested moving forward with an integrated development project including irrigation, fertilizer, seeds, modern agricultural tools and market management in Lumbini Province, which is the country's fertile land for agricultural production. Pun also demanded that some projects be allocated on the recommendation of MPs for the development of all 165 constituencies in a proportional manner. He reminded that this tradition had existed in the past as well.
