Congress leader Shekhar Koirala and his supporters have decided not to participate in the parallel meeting and discussion to be called by former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka. They have emphasized the need to initiate dialogue for party unity.

Koirala's supporters had already decided to wait until the Supreme Court had fixed Sunday for a hearing on the dispute over the legitimacy of the Congress. But the court had adjourned the hearing without filing the case on Sunday. 'Now the wait for the court is over. The party cannot be allowed to suffer further damage by waiting for another date. Dialogue should be initiated for party unity,' said Jeevan Pariyar, who was a joint general secretary in the previous central working committee.

Pariyar said that they are in favor of unity and that President Gagan Thapa should take the lead in the dialogue for unity. He added, 'Shekhar Koirala has also been saying that he is struggling for party unity. The future of the party lies not in isolation, but in complete unity.’

After the Election Commission recognized the Central Working Committee elected from the special general convention held from 27-30 Poush on 27th Magh, former President Sher Bahadur Deuba and former Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court on 4th Magh. The presentation of the same case was scheduled for Sunday. After the election, the Deuba faction had been running parallel activities in an institutional manner, a dispute had arisen within the Congress. The Central Disciplinary Committee had warned Khadka on 18th Chaitra that it would warn him and take action if parallel activities were repeated.

Koirala's side will not attend the parallel meeting called by Khadka. Khadka had called a meeting of the Central Working Committee elected from the 14th General Convention in Dhumbarahi last week to review the election and discuss contemporary political issues. The meeting was turned into an informal gathering due to Koirala’s disagreement. ‘We did not allow banners to be placed in the name of a parallel meeting. We did not allow any decision to be made out of this,” said another leader from the Koirala faction. “We will not participate in any discussions called in the capacity of caretaker. We have told Koirala to call a meeting if necessary.”

Pressure for unity has also begun within the ‘core group’ of the Deuba faction. Deuba, who went to Singapore on 13 Falgun without even voting in the House of Representatives elections, has not returned yet. He has been running the faction from there and Khadka has been leading it since then. According to leaders close to him, he had planned to return to Nepal last week, but his stay has been extended by a few days due to the latest developments in the country.

Koirala's side will not attend the parallel meeting called by Khadka. Deuba faction leader Jeevan Bahadur Shahi says that one should not wait and wait for the case. He says that there are only two options: dialogue for party unity or forming another party. “In the current challenging times, it is not good to split the party under any circumstances. Dialogue should be held for unity,” he said.

General Secretary Pradeep Poudel says that since no one has the right to disobey the decision made by the constitutional body, it will be easier for all leaders to join after accepting the central working committee that came from the special general convention. ‘The main mandate of the special general convention is to hold the 15th general convention. The general convention can establish broad unity within the party,’ he says. The Congress has already made public the schedule to hold the central general convention in Kathmandu from 16-19 Asoj. The establishment side has also started informal dialogue to reconcile the Deuba group.
