The government has decided to significantly reduce the fuel facility provided to government employees and distinguished officials with the aim of controlling public expenditure and managing the fuel crisis.

According to the Ministry of Finance, expenditure control has become inevitable due to the increase in the price of petroleum products in the international market, supply imbalance and failure to collect the expected revenue in the current fiscal year. In this context, the ministry has stated that the fuel facility has been reduced to maintain austerity.

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle has revised the ‘Work Operation Directive, 2081’ as per the provisions of the Economic Procedures and Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2076 BS and re-determined the fuel-related facilities.

According to the revised provisions, secretaries and distinguished officials will now receive only 70 liters of fuel, while they used to receive 125 liters per month. In the case of joint secretary-level officials, it has been reduced from 100 liters to 50 liters. The ministry has stated that the facilities of ministers and constitutional officials will remain the same.

Similarly, the fuel facility available for vehicles of central government offices has been reduced. Offices with up to 30 employees will now get only 35 liters of petrol and 50 liters of diesel, which was previously 75 liters and 100 liters respectively. Similarly, the same limit will apply to offices with up to 50 employees. Additionally, 35 liters of petrol and 50 liters of diesel have been provided for every 100 employees, which is almost half the amount compared to before.

Fuel facility has been reduced for two-wheelers. Earlier, 12 liters of petrol were provided per month, but now only 8 liters have been provided.

The government believes that this decision will help control public expenditure and help manage the current economic challenges.
