The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing to bring three major departments currently under other ministries under its own control.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to bring the departments of foreign aid, foreign employment and foreign trade under its own control.
Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and high-ranking officials of the ministry are confident that bringing these three major departments under its own control will help in effectively resolving the current challenges.
It is said that bringing these departments under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will help in making the scope of work clear and systematic.
Earlier, various foreign ministers had made similar efforts, but due to lack of sufficient manpower and lack of a clear and firm stance on the restructuring of the ministry, those efforts could not be successful.
Minister Khanal has directed Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai to conduct an internal study to take this issue forward.
The Department of Foreign Employment, which is currently under the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security, is looking into the internal and external aspects of foreign employment.
However, according to a joint secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issues like certification of workers, rescue in emergencies, and repatriation of dead workers are ultimately referred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Similarly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs argues that a foreign aid and foreign trade department is needed under its jurisdiction to attract more foreign direct investment and aid to Nepal and expand the international market.
