More than 7,000 ‘applications (apps)’ and ‘websites’ (URLs) related to online betting have been shut down.

In the course of implementing the government’s decision on governance reforms, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority has shut down websites and apps in coordination with ‘internet’ service providers. According to Surya Prasad Lamichhane, Deputy Director of the Authority, internet service providers have been instructed to identify and shut down illegally operating betting-related apps and websites.

‘So far, more than 7,000 such URLs and apps have been shut down. In the last one week, the Authority has received more than 50 complaints about online betting through various means including telephone, email, and message. Action has been taken by addressing all of them,’ he said.

Out of the 100 action items on governance reforms approved by the Council of Ministers on Chaitra 13, item number 42 mentions that betting-related apps and websites will be shut down within 24 hours. In accordance with the same decision, the Authority, in coordination with the Internet Service Provider, has immediately closed all identified betting-related apps and websites operating through electronic means.

According to Sub-section (4) of Section 125 of the Criminal Code, 2074, no one is allowed to bet or cause to bet. Violation of this will result in confiscation of the amount used in it and imprisonment for up to one year and a fine of up to Rs 10,000.

Similarly, the Advertisement (Regulation) Act, 2066 prohibits advertisements that encourage gambling or playing and buying and selling lottery tickets without permission. Violation of this will result in imprisonment for up to one year and a fine of up to Rs 10,000.

The government has again urged people not to use and operate betting apps and websites. It has warned that strict action will be taken if they are found to be operating or using them illegally. The government has also urged people to inform the relevant authorities if they have information about suspicious apps or websites.
