Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nawaraj Adhikari, the chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, has said that the process of revoking the driving licenses of drivers who violate road discipline and drive recklessly has been initiated.

Speaking in an interaction with representatives of transport entrepreneurs and labor unions, the SSP Adhikari said that drivers who repeatedly violate the rules and do not even pay the fine will not be spared. SSP Adhikari said that the first mission of the traffic police is to bring about a change in behavior. He accepted that the police are also a part of society and promised to improve any shortcomings.

‘If any traffic policeman works in an opaque manner or behaves badly, please inform me directly, we will take immediate action. No one is allowed to behave outside professional dignity. Passengers are scared due to drivers and co-drivers who wear full-body masks, straighten their hair and wear indecent clothes. Change the appearance and get-up of your driver and co-driver. We are ready to train them.’

He said that due to the ‘contract system’ (the rule of paying a fixed amount per day) in the transport sector, drivers are speeding and cheating. Instead, the SSP officer urged businessmen to switch to e-ticketing and online systems.  He said that school bus and public transport drivers were found driving under the influence of alcohol (mapse) and drugs (lapse) in the morning, and the traffic police will be very strict about this.
