The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has called for greater commitment to protecting press and freedom of expression and responsible journalism on the occasion of its 71st foundation day.
In her congratulatory speech, Federation President Nirmala Sharma congratulated journalists in the country and abroad, saying, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all journalists and supporters of press freedom across the country and in different parts of the world.”
She paid tribute to the martyred journalists, expressing her respect for the pioneers who have contributed to the field of journalism since the past. “I pay my heartfelt tribute to the journalists who were martyred in the fight for press and freedom of expression,” she said.
President Sharma mentioned that the Federation has been continuously working for press freedom and the rights of working journalists for more than seven decades. “Establishing a strong democracy and the rule of law through professional and accountable journalism is our priority,” she said.
Noting that the challenge of misinformation has increased with the increasing use of social media, she pointed out the need for responsible journalism. "Amidst the increasing flow of false information, the main responsibility today is to conduct journalism based on truth and facts," she said.
Expecting political stability from the strong government formed after the recently concluded House of Representatives elections, she urged the government to discuss with stakeholders and bring in a law related to communication. She also demanded that the government provide compensation to the media houses and journalists affected during the Gen-G movement.
Expressing her commitment to oppose any interference with press freedom, she said, "No kind of control over the constitutional freedom of the press and expression is acceptable."
Stating that a government with about two-thirds majority was formed after the recently concluded House of Representatives elections, she said that it is necessary to provide compensation to the media houses and journalists affected by accidents during the Gen-G movement as per the details collected by the Federation of Journalists.
‘After the recently concluded House of Representatives elections, a government with a two-thirds majority has been formed, and the Federation is confident that this will end the long-standing political instability,’ the statement said. ‘In addition, we urge the government to bring forward the long-delayed media-related laws and necessary laws after discussing them with the Federation and the stakeholders. Similarly, it is necessary to increase morale by providing compensation to media houses and journalists who were injured in accidents during the Genji movement, as per the details collected by the Federation.’
