The Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security has decided to renew the labor permits of Nepali workers working in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Jordan and Turkey. This has opened the way for Nepalis who are on leave to go to their employer countries. Labor renewals in those countries were stopped due to the war that developed in West Asia.
The Ministry of Labor has not decided to renew the labor permits of Nepalis working in Iran, Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq and Lebanon.
According to the Department of Foreign Employment, 70,503 people, including new and old, were granted labor permits for employment until last January. Of these, 48,226 people had obtained labor permits to go to those 12 countries in West Asia. Out of the 5 main destination countries of Nepali workers, 4 destinations are Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the Gulf. Due to the lack of regular air services, even workers with visas from Europe were not able to fly.
On February 16, the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran. Insecurity has increased since Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting US base camps in all Gulf countries. In Falgun, the department granted work permits to 52,000 people, both new and old. As of Falgun, only 14,536 people who had received new visas in 10 countries in West Asia had been granted work permits, most of whom have not been able to fly.
