Twenty-one Nepali citizens who were lured to Cambodia by an organized gang and involved in online fraud activities have been returned to Nepal. They were repatriated to Nepal at the initiative of the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok and the Non-Resident Nepali Association in Cambodia.
According to the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok, those who had been lured to Cambodia by various means and were being used in various illegal activities in the ‘online scamming centers’ and casinos operating illegally there and were staying without visas were rescued and sent to Nepal with the help of the Cambodian government.
Those rescued in this way arrived in Nepal on Friday. Similarly, the embassy has stated that efforts are being made to rescue and return other stranded Nepalis from Cambodia.
It is said that the embassy is trying to rescue them after receiving information that Nepali citizens have been used in illegal activities, including online fraud, in Cambodia and have been staying without visas or overstaying their visas. According to the embassy, the passports of the Nepalis who were illegally employed in such illegal activities have been confiscated by the individuals and companies who have been employed in such illegal activities and then free travel permits have been issued to the stranded citizens and the embassy has also appealed to avail such facilities.
According to a statement issued by the embassy, in the latest Cambodian tourism statistics, 101 Nepalis went to Cambodia on a tourist visa in 2021, 1977 in 2022, 2940 in 2023, 6404 in 2024 and 9676 in 2025.
The embassy has also urged people not to fall into any temptation and engage in illegal activities, as they often go for foreign employment only after obtaining a labor permit as per the criteria set by the Nepal government and to earn a lot of money quickly and easily, and then end up stranded there.
In the second week of last January, the Cambodian National Police arrested more than 2,000 foreign nationals from a casino complex in Bavet city during a raid against online fraud. Nepali citizens were also among those involved.
On the morning of January 4, the National Police General Directorate of Cambodia, in coordination with the Public Prosecutor of the First Court of Svay Rieng Province, raided the Van Cheng Casino complex in Ta Beb village, Bavet city.
The operation was carried out on suspicion that online fraud activities were being conducted in 22 buildings within the casino complex. It was reported that 30 of them were Nepalese. Of those arrested in this way and others, 21 returned to Nepal on Friday at the initiative of the government.
