Prime Minister Sushila Karki has had a telephone conversation with her Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.

This afternoon, she telephoned her Qatari counterpart Al-Thani and expressed her concern over the recent developments in the West Asia region. Prime Minister Karki expressed her gratitude on behalf of the Government of Nepal and the Nepali people for providing security and protection to the 360,000 Nepali citizens in Qatar.

'Currently, about 360,000 Nepali citizens are living and working in the State of Qatar. I am very happy to hear that they are safe and well taken care of,' she said, 'We express our heartfelt gratitude to you and your government for taking care of our people.'

Prime Minister Karki said that Nepal is closely monitoring the developments in the West Asia region and urged all parties concerned to exercise restraint, not to further escalate the conflict and to ensure the safety of citizens.

Nepal emphasized that all nations should respect and abide by the UN Charter, international law, the Geneva Conventions and humanitarian law.  Stating that war cannot be an alternative to peace under any pretext, Prime Minister Karki believed that long-term peace can only be ensured through dialogue and diplomacy.

She also expressed confidence that the relations between the two countries would further strengthen in the coming days through high-level visit exchanges, economic and cultural cooperation and people-to-people relations.

During the telephone conversation, Prime Minister Karki expressed solidarity with the situation in Qatar and expressed deep concern over the attack on Qatar's sovereign territory, especially in civilian areas. She also expressed confidence that Qatar would be able to deal with the current situation with a constructive role.

Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Al-Thani highly praised the harmonious, deep and friendly relations between Nepal and Qatar. Noting that Nepalese citizens in Qatar have made a great contribution, he said that the government would provide them with security and protection like Qatari citizens in the current situation.

Calling the current situation unfortunate, he informed that his country is only trying to protect its sovereignty and territory or for self-defense. He thanked Nepal for the friendship and solidarity it has shown in this difficult time.

Hoping that this situation will end soon, he also emphasized that efforts should be made to further strengthen and expand the relations between the two countries as before.
