The Sherpa community is celebrating the Gyalpo Lhosar festival today with various programs. Lho means year and Chhar means new. The Sherpa community celebrates it as the New Year.

On the occasion of Lhosar, the Sherpa community has a tradition of cleaning the roads and water sources in their villages and neighborhoods, eating the nine-grain dish Guthuk and Khapse, and exchanging good wishes with each other to welcome the New Year. This festival is considered an opportunity to enhance family and social harmony.

The Sherpa community living in the Himalayan region of Nepal, including the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, celebrates Gyalpo Lhosar with the belief that the new year begins on the Pratipada tithi of the full moon of the first full moon of the month of Falgun by counting the lunar month. The Syabru dance, the melodious tune of the Tungana (Damyang) and the collective joy make Gyalpo Lhosar more meaningful.

It is believed that this festival, celebrated as the New Year, will help strengthen the spirit of mutual love, brotherhood, harmony and unity in the society by bringing new hope, enthusiasm and joy. This festival creates an atmosphere of cooperation and understanding by making the relationship between family, friendship and community closer.

On this occasion, there is a tradition of visiting monasteries, receiving blessings from religious leaders and lamas. The government has declared a public holiday today on the occasion of Gyalpo Lhosar. President Ram Chandra Poudel and Prime Minister Sushila Karki have extended their best wishes on the occasion of Lhosar.
