So far, only 671 candidates have opened bank accounts to spend the necessary funds for election campaigns.
Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai informed that out of a total of 3,406 candidates, 671 have opened bank accounts. This is about 20 percent of the total candidates.
The Commission has made arrangements for political parties and candidates to mandatorily deposit and spend the necessary funds for campaigning through bank accounts.
According to spokesperson Bhattarai, at the request of the Commission, Nepal Rastra Bank has issued a circular to banks and financial institutions to facilitate the opening of bank accounts for candidates. He informed that political parties and candidates across the country have currently initiated the process of opening bank accounts. He said that the Commission will provide necessary facilitation by collecting information from banks and financial institutions about the problems seen while opening accounts for candidates. According to him, the Commission had organized a discussion program on Monday to clarify the purpose of operation of the opened accounts, management process and the facilitation to be provided by banks.
He informed that banks and financial institutions have expressed their commitment to fully cooperate in the bank account system implemented to make election expenses transparent and systematic. He said that banks and financial institutions have cooperated as per the expectations of the Commission in maintaining good financial governance.
He also informed that the Commission has requested to include voter education materials in mobile apps, ATM machines and other digital displays operated by banks and financial institutions to make voter education effective. He said that banks and financial institutions have been positive on this issue. According to him, the Deputy Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank and the concerned Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Finance were present in the discussion held by the Commission.
