Funerals for those killed in Meghalaya coal mine fire held in India

The bodies of three people from Khotang who lost their lives in a fire while setting off an explosion at an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya, India, have been cremated in India. The cremations of 27-year-old Purniram Magar, his brother 24-year-old Surendra Magar, and 35-year-old Nar Bahadur Magar, who lost their lives in the incident that took place on Magh 22, were held in Salgharibhanjyang, Barahapokhari Rural Municipality-1, Barahapokhari.

According to relative Prakash Khapangi Magar, the funeral was held on Monday in a place called Bhalupara in Shilong. Ratna Rai, 50, of Durchhim Jorkafal, Halesi Tuwachung Municipality-5, is also missing in the incident.

Relative Bhogindra Rai said that he had already died and that he was shaved on Sunday according to Kirat rituals. 27 people, including 3 Nepalis, have died in the incident.


Prakash Khapangi Magar, who reached the scene, informed that 4 Nepalese who were injured in the incident are being treated at Nilgreen Hospital in Shilong. According to him, 48-year-old Dawa Sherpa of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality-2 Mudhe, 40-year-old Bam Bahadur Magar and 45-year-old Karna Bahadur Magar of Barahapakheri Rural Municipality-1, and Lalit Bahadur Magar of Sawane, Udayapur Triyuga Municipality are being treated.

Prakash said that their condition is improving. 5 other people who were injured in the incident are also being treated.
