Two more people from Khotang have died in a fire that broke out while blasting an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya, India.
Nar Bahadur Magar, 35, of Bhanjyang, Barahapokhari Rural Municipality-1, and Ratna Rai, 50, of Durchhim, Halesi Tuwachung Municipality-5, died on the spot.
According to Prakash Budhathoki, Deputy Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office, Khotang, Magar died on the spot while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. Local Bhogindra Rai said that Ratna Rai died on the spot. He said that after receiving information that Rai had died because he was inside the mine at the time of the explosion, his son was shaved according to Kirat rituals. “After receiving information that he had died, his son was shaved,” Rai said. Ratna Rai had gone to Meghalaya on 9 Asoj. 27 people from Nepal, Assam and Meghalaya have died in the incident. Nine others are undergoing treatment.
Earlier, it was reported that brothers from the same house in Bhanjyang, Barahapokhari, Salghari had died in the incident. Purniram Magar, 27, and his brother Surendra Magar, 24, of Salghari Bhanjyang, Barahapokhari Rural Municipality-1, died on the spot after the explosion that occurred around 11 am on Thursday.
According to Prakash Khapangi Magar, a relative of the deceased, 35-year-old Nar Bahadur of Bhanjyang in Barahapokhari, 40-year-old Bam Bahadur Magar and 45-year-old Karna Bahadur Magar were injured in the incident. Lalit Bahadur Magar of Udayapur Sawane was also injured in the incident.
Of the seven-member team that reached Meghalaya and worked in the coal mine, only Tarabal Magar of Balampa in Barahapokhari is safe. After the explosion, Tarabal informed his relatives about the incident over the phone. Relatives of the deceased and injured in the accident said that they had left their homes for Meghalaya on 3 Poush for employment.
