President Ramchandra Poudel and Emperor Naruhito of Japan held a courtesy call on Tuesday. President Poudel, who is on a four-day visit to Japan, held a courtesy call on Emperor Naruhito of Japan at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

At the invitation of the Japanese government, President Poudel, along with First Lady Sabita Poudel, led a Nepali delegation to attend a special ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Japan. During the meeting, President Poudel and Emperor Naruhito met. On the occasion, President Poudel highly appreciated the cooperation and role played by Japan as an important and reliable development partner in Nepal's social and economic development.

'Japan is supporting Nepal in areas such as human resources, health, agriculture, infrastructure development, environmental protection, and cultural preservation, and Nepal and Nepalese have benefited greatly from this,' said President Poudel's press advisor Kiran Pokharel, quoting him in a conversation with Emperor Naruhito of Japan.

He also said that both countries are inspired by the teachings and ideals of Gautam Buddha. 'Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, has served as a strong bridge to strengthen the relationship between the people of Nepal and Japan,' said President Poudel.'' President Poudel said that the long-standing relationship between the two countries, based on history, culture and mutual cooperation, has moved forward with closer and deeper friendship since the establishment of diplomatic relations.'' 'The 70th anniversary of Nepal-Japan diplomatic relations that we are celebrating this year is a milestone in the bilateral relations established between us,'' said President Poudel.''

Stating that the exchange of high-level visits has further strengthened the relationship between the two countries, President Poudel recalled the visit of Emperor Naruhito to Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Pokhara and Lumbini during his friendly and special visit as Crown Prince in 1987.'' In addition, he expressed his gratitude to the Emperor and the Japanese government for awarding him the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in 2020. President Poudel, on behalf of the Government and people of Nepal, expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government for its goodwill and support and invited the Emperor and Empress to visit Nepal at a suitable time.

On the occasion, Emperor Naruhito of Japan said that the anniversary of Nepal-Japan diplomatic relations should be celebrated with joy. On the occasion, he mentioned that he still remembers his visit to Nepal in 1986, informed President Poudel's Press Advisor Pokharel.

Emperor Naruhito mentioned that he was inspired to study water issues after seeing the scene of women holding jars for drinking water during his trek to Sarangkot in Pokhara.

He said that Japan would provide Nepal with as much assistance as possible and recalled that both countries have been helping each other in natural disasters.

Emperor Naruhito said that Japan has honored President Poudel for his contribution to the development of Nepal-Japan relations. 

President Poudel had earlier addressed a program with members of the Japanese business community on Monday, while Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hori Iwao had paid him a courtesy call. 

During his visit to Japan, President Poudel gave a special address at a program organized to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Nepal-Japan diplomatic relations.  He also inspected the Nepali Embassy here. 

Today, he will pay a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of Japan.  President Poudel is scheduled to return home on Wednesday after completing his four-day visit to Japan.
