Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office officer Indra Neupane and three employees have been arrested for accepting bribes.
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Monday arrested Neupane, an officer of the Foreign Postal Customs Branch of the Customs, Nasu Chhabi Prasad Rijal, an employee of the Postal Services Department, Goswara Post Office Export Branch, deployed by the Ministry of Communications, and office assistant Ganesh Prasad Pudasaini, along with Rs 268,288 and 23 mobile phones. 23 mobile phones belonging to all three employees and some other suspicious persons were seized and the bribe and undisclosed source of the money was recovered from Neupane and his staff, said CIAA spokesperson Suresh Neupane.
The CIAA had deployed a team from Tangal after a complaint was filed that a bribe was taken from a service recipient while sending goods through a courier from Nepal. According to the CIAA, Rs 146,420, including Rs 10,000 bribe, was recovered from Pudasaini's office, Rs 40,350, an undisclosed source, was recovered from his house, and Rs 96,070, from his possession. Similarly, 38,848 rupees, including 20,000 rupees taken by Nasu Rijal from service recipients and 18,848 rupees from undisclosed sources, have been recovered.
All this money was taken in bribes with the connivance of officer Neupane, Nasu Rijal and his associate Pudasaini and was taken under control by the Authority before it was distributed. Apart from the three, the Authority has stated that preparations are underway to send 23 mobile forensic laboratories recovered from other employees.
