The Nepal Red Cross Society has urged not to use the Red Cross symbol during campaigning for the upcoming House of Representatives elections.

The Red Cross emblem is an internationally protected symbol of humanitarian service under the Geneva Convention, and is prohibited from being used for political, religious or ideological purposes, said a statement issued by General Secretary Min Bahadur Malla today. 'In the context of the upcoming House of Representatives elections to be held on Falgun 21, if any activity is seen in which the Red Cross emblem, name, emblem-marked clothing or identity is used in the election campaign of any political party or candidate with the aim of expressing support or opposition, it will clearly have a serious impact on the impartiality, neutrality, independence and credibility of the Red Cross campaign,' the statement said.

The statement also urges Red Cross volunteers and employees not to engage in any election campaign using materials bearing the Red Cross emblem. If any Red Cross official is a candidate in the election, they are also urged to declare their separation from the Red Cross.

The Red Cross has also requested its officials and employees not to support or oppose any political party, candidate or individual, not to politically link the Red Cross campaign through social media, public events, demonstrations or any other means, and not to make Red Cross property, premises or offices available to support the propaganda of any political party.
