The embassy has also urged Nepali citizens not to pay a bond before the interview, saying that there is no guarantee that the visa will be approved.
What you should know
Nepalis who travel to the United States for various work will no longer be able to enjoy the benefits available to citizens there.
The new rule came into effect after US President Donald Trump's government recently adopted a lenient policy targeting immigrants. The US, which has also recently closed immigrant visas, has also closed the concessions available in services such as health care, housing facilities, family support, and educational assistance. According to the Nepali Embassy in the US, foreign citizens will no longer be able to avail any of these services. This will also directly affect Nepalis. Many Nepalis have been going to the US for study, travel, employment, business, and meeting family or relatives. Once there, they used to avail preferential services from the US government. According to the embassy, now those who provided false information and obtained those services will have their visas and green cards canceled. "If any foreign national in the United States is found to be relying on any facility or assistance provided by the US government for its citizens, such as preferential health care, housing, family assistance, educational assistance, etc., illegally or by submitting false information or details, the visa or green card status of the person involved in such an act will be directly affected and may even be revoked," the embassy said in its
notice. "Based on the data of Nepalis who went to the US for various purposes in 2024 alone, Nepali citizens are at the top of the list of those receiving preferential services from the US government, and therefore the US has issued a public notice regarding the current suspension of immigrant visas for Nepalis." The embassy has warned that obtaining preferential services by providing false information could further tighten the US government's visa policy towards Nepal. ‘Therefore, Nepali citizens residing in the United States for various purposes are hereby earnestly requested not to rely on any facilities/assistance such as preferential health care facilities, housing facilities, family assistance, educational assistance, etc., illegally or by submitting false information or details, and not to misuse the B1/B2 visa,’ the notice said.
Request not to pay visa bond in advance Similarly, Nepalis who have gone to the US on B1/B2 (business/tourism) visas have been required to post a visa bond, stating that they have overstayed in the US and are engaged in work other than that specified. The US has implemented a rule requiring Nepalis to post a visa bond for B1/B2 visa applications, effective from January 21, 2026. Now, Nepalis will have to deposit between US$5,000 and US$15,000 to apply for such a visa.
This has made it more difficult to obtain a US visa. Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Nepal has also warned against paying the visa bond in advance. The embassy has urged Nepali citizens not to do so, saying that paying the bond before the interview does not guarantee that the visa will be approved.
‘Do not pay the visa bond in advance,’ the embassy said in a statement
, ‘Paying the bond before the interview does not guarantee that the visa will be approved. If you are granted a visa, the consular officer will instruct you on how to pay the bond with a direct link to the correct website only after the interview.’
The statement also states that the deposit deposited before the interview is non-refundable.
