Martyrs' Day is being celebrated across the country today with various programs being organized. This day is celebrated in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the welfare of the country and the people.
This day is celebrated in memory of the four martyrs Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chandra Thakur, Gangalal Shrestha and Shukraraj Shastri and other martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy in Nepal.
They were sentenced to death by the then government for raising their voice against the Rana regime. The sacrifices of these martyrs and the inspiration they received from them ended the Rana regime and democracy was established in Nepal.
Martyrs' Day, celebrated every year on Magh 16, is being organized in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment and restoration of democracy and freedom of various periods.
Martyrs' Week has been announced with various programs from Magh 10 to 16 and various programs have been organized. Since 2012 BS, the day was started to be celebrated in memory of the martyrs on Magh 16 every year under the coordination of the then Kathmandu Municipality.
In 1997 BS, while demanding independence, martyr Shukraraj Shastri was executed by the Rana rulers on Magh 10 at Pachali in Teku, Kathmandu, on Magh 13 at Dharmabhakta Mathema at Siphal, and Gangalal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand were executed on Magh 15 at Shobha Bhagwati.
