Home Minister calls for unity to minimize damage from disasters including earthquakes

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has called for unity to minimize the loss of life and property due to disasters including earthquakes.

Addressing a program organized on the occasion of the 28th Earthquake Safety Day on Friday, he said that the government will continue to make planned efforts to institutionalize, sustain and result-oriented the necessary work related to disaster risk reduction. 

Minister Aryal emphasized that the construction of earthquake-resistant structures should be made more effective in the coming days. He said that the capacity of government agencies, private sector, NGOs, construction entrepreneurs and community levels for preparedness, response and reconstruction should be enhanced. 

'When the technology-based multi-hazard early warning system can be made effective, it will help in preparedness and reduce the loss of life and property,' said Home Minister Aryal. 'Preparation of governments and citizens at all levels for earthquake safety is important. Building safe homes, communities and nations from earthquakes has become the responsibility of all of us.'

He said that effective and result-oriented implementation of programs based on the concept of systematic and sustainable development is the need of the day to stay safe from disasters including earthquakes. Stating that Nepal is developing its capacity to respond to disasters including earthquakes compared to the past, Home Minister Aryal said that the scope of understanding related to disasters including earthquakes is also expanding. 

'Awareness of preparedness and building strong structures has expanded. Local levels have started making it mandatory to comply with building codes. The idea that houses should be built according to standards after passing the map is also developing among citizens,' he said. 

Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Kumar Ingnam said that necessary preparedness and vigilance are essential to minimize damage caused by earthquakes. 'Sustainable development is not possible without considering disaster risk reduction in development and construction,' he said, 'Earthquake risk reduction and preparedness are essential conditions.'

Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol said that coordination between the federal, provincial and local governments is necessary for risk reduction and preparedness for natural disasters including earthquakes. Earthquake Safety Day is being observed today with the slogan 'Government at all levels, preparation of all citizens, earthquake-resilient Nepal, future responsibility'.
