Over 160,000 people have applied in six days to join the Election Police, which will be recruited to provide security for the upcoming House of Representatives elections.

Applications for election police recruitment were opened from 25th December and 160,239 people have applied till Wednesday. The last date for application is Thursday (today).

Applications were opened for 133,980 people to be deployed under the Nepal Police and 15,110 people to be deployed under the Armed Police Force (APF) for the security of the House of Representatives elections scheduled for 21st February. Nepal Police had opened recruitment from its district police offices and the Armed Police Force from the districts' battalions/combatants.

Of which 147,988 are through the Nepal Police and 12,251 are through the Armed Police Force. Of those who applied through the police, 21,736 are temporary police officers who were deployed in previous elections and 937 are temporary police officers who applied through the Armed Police Force. 39,901 women have applied.

The remaining are male applicants. The total number of applications will be decided by Thursday night and the selection process will be taken forward after that, both police headquarters have said. According to the police, there have been relatively fewer applications for temporary police this time compared to previous elections. In the representative and provincial assembly member elections held in Mangsir, 2079, applications were opened for the recruitment of 115,000 temporary police, double that, or 232,088 people.

Before that, in the local level election security held in Baisakh, 2079, applications were opened for the recruitment of about 100,000 temporary police, three times more than the demand, or about 300,000. However, in this election, only a little more than the demand has been received. Looking at the ratio of applications, security officials have analyzed that there may be about 200,000 applications this time. Accordingly, if applications are received, selection will be made according to the specified criteria.

According to the police, out of the applications for the upcoming elections, 11,070 people applied on 25th December, 17,174 on 26th December, 31,288 on 27th December, 35,513 on 28th December, 34,195 on 29th December and 31,062 on 30th December.

Out of these, in addition to former temporary personnel, former security personnel and forest guards have also applied for the election police. The Central Security Committee meeting has already approved the mobilization of about 337,000 security personnel for the upcoming election security.

In which, about 188,000 manpower is being mobilized from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and National Investigation Department. In addition, there are preparations to deploy about 150,000 'election police' (formerly temporary police) for a period of 40 days.

Those recruited into the election police will receive the basic salary and clothing and ration allowance of the same as that of the police and armed police personnel. According to the Unified (Police and Armed Police Force Nepal) Procedures for Recruitment, Selection, Appointment and Mobilization of Election Police-2082, an election police officer will be provided with a salary of Rs. 34,000 for 40 days at a rate of Rs. 869 per day and 40 paisa, a ration allowance for 40 days as determined by the District Rate Determination Committee (varies according to the district), a one-time allowance of Rs. 846 per person (transportation allowance) to go and return to the place assigned to the election, a lump sum of Rs. 1,200 for lunch expenses at the rate of Rs. 300 per day for four days, and a one-time clothing allowance as determined by the police and armed forces in that district according to the weather in the district. It is stated that all the amounts given in this way will be sent to the bank account of the concerned election police officer.

If these personnel deployed in the election are injured in the course of their duties, the injured person will be provided with compensation as prescribed by the government and in case of death, the next of kin will be provided with compensation as prescribed by the government. The criteria approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs also state that those who do not go to the designated place before the election and do not complete their responsibilities will not be given any of the specified facilities.

Similarly, if the election is canceled or postponed, even those who are in training will automatically be canceled/suspended, as stated in the procedure related to the election police. The Election Commission has already determined 10,967 polling stations and 23,112 polling stations across the country. Preparations are underway to deploy the inner perimeter police and election police in the election, followed by the Armed Police Force and the army for external security management based on risk.

A recruitment selection committee has been formed in the respective districts under the coordination of the Chief District Officer for the recruitment of election police. The criteria were that the age of 18 years and not exceeding 54 years by the last date for applying for recruitment should be 18 years and not more than 54 years. According to which, the criteria were set that the maximum person born in 2028 Magh and the minimum person born in 2064 Magh (18 years of age and not exceeding 54 years of age as of the last date of application).

According to the criteria, candidates must be a Nepali citizen, be able to read and write, have not been convicted by a court for a criminal offense that shows moral turpitude, have not been a member of any political party at the time of recruitment, be physically and mentally healthy, not be a member of a terrorist or subversive organization, be at least 5 feet tall, have a chest width of 31 to 33 inches, weigh 50 kg for men and at least 4 feet 10 inches tall, weigh 42 kg for women, and not be pregnant. Among those who have applied to join the Election Police, candidates who have retired and been granted gratuity from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force, former forest guards, and those who have applied for various positions for recruitment in the army/police from January 2081 to mid-December 2082 and have passed the physical fitness and health test must submit an admission letter, have worked satisfactorily as a temporary police officer in the House of Representatives, Provincial Assembly, and local level elections in the past (as per the temporary police certificate), have worked in security agencies of foreign countries and have not retired It is mentioned that priority will be given to recruitment in the case of. They are going to be recruited with 10 days of training and 30 days of deployment in the field. Accordingly, the last day to apply for election watch recruitment is till Thursday.
