A two-day 'Tharu National Maghi Festival' is being organized to celebrate Maghi, the great festival of the Tharu community.
The Tharu community living in the Tharuhat Terai region from East Mechi to West Mahakali has been celebrating this festival with great joy under the names of Magh/Maghi/Tila Sankrait/Khinchara/Khinchari/Khinchadi.
The festival is being organized by the Tharu Welfare Society (THAKAS) Central Committee and jointly organized by 30 Tharu organizations at Tundikhel in Kathmandu on Poush 30 and Magh 1.
In a press conference organized today to provide information about the festival, coordinator of the main organizing committee, Premi Lal Chaudhary, said that it is believed that this festival will help develop Nepal's economy by preserving and promoting Tharu culture and attracting domestic and foreign tourists to participate in the festival.
'In the Tharu community, the Maghi festival emphasizes the importance of New Year, Independence Day, selection of village leadership for social work, research (review) and social, cultural, religious aspects,' he said.
The Tharu community prepares for the festival by making dunatapari and preparing food before the arrival of Maghi. On the day of Poush Masant, the pig/bangur is killed and on the same day, they light a fire and stay awake all night singing dhumaru along with the tambourine and madal. On Magh 1, people bathe in the nearby stream, river, lake, pond, etc. in the morning, which is called 'Magh Lahan'.
It is believed that if people worship and make vows after bathing, children will be happy and their wishes will be fulfilled. It is a cultural tradition to make a stone Mahadev and worship it with water, flowers, coins and money, and after getting blessings from elders, apply white tika on rice and come home and 'Nisrau Kad' and eat Magh sweets and sweets while taking 'Syava Dhog' according to the sign in the family and friends.
The festival has been celebrated in Kathmandu since 2059 under the leadership of the Tharu Welfare Association. The main attractions of this festival, which is celebrated with the main slogan of 'Tharu art, culture, laughter, identity, our campaign to preserve and promote it', include a cultural tableau of the Tharu community, a rally performance, the main inauguration ceremony, various Tharu cultural performances, exhibition and sale of Tharu food dishes, Tharu skills and handicrafts, book exhibition and sale, motorcycle rally, 'Jita Marna' and a program to honor Tharu distinguished personalities who have made special contributions in various fields, informed coordinator Chaudhary.
According to him, the festival will have about 100 stalls (stalls) of Tharu food, handicrafts, and book exhibitions. The festival will feature food stalls featuring various dishes from the Tharu community, including dhikri, ghongi, andik bhaat, khinchari, sesame laddu, andiko jadko jhol, khariya, pork, gangto, sindhara, alusinki, bayarko chutney, bariya, and telpour roti, according to the organizers.
