With the aim of expanding its relationship with and reaching out to its listeners, Radio Kantipur launched a road show titled 'Radio on Wheels' 10 years ago.
At that time, such a program on the street was rare. The radio started this journey after the constitution was promulgated with the aim of directly meeting and interacting with listeners in places where the radio's frequency did not reach.
Now, the seventh edition of the journey has begun. Although Covid did not allow it to travel for a few years, now Kantipur Radio is reaching cities and towns with more zeal and enthusiasm to meet its listeners. This journey, which started last Saturday from BP Chowk in Nepalgunj, has reached Dhangadhi. It is reaching Surkhet on Monday. After visiting 14 cities in this way, the journey will take a break by performing a program in Kathmandu on 8th Magh. This program, which will be organized from Birtamod in the east to Dhangadhi in the west, will have special entertainment activities.
Presenter duo Mahima Bhattarai and Prajwal Khadka are traveling to cities and towns with such a fun program. This year, ‘Radio on Wheels’ is sponsored by Extreme Energy Drink, said Radio Kantipur Station Manager Pawan Acharya. Presenters Mahima and Prajwal will take the program to Hetauda. Then Mahesh Limbu and Ismita Rana will reach another city. Comedian Raja Rajendra Pokhrel and singer Bishwa Nepali will accompany them. Singer Shiva Pariyar will accompany the group from Pokhara, said Pawan.
Along with them, singers from different cities are also scheduled to perform on the same stage. Bhojpuri singer Sunil Pandit is coming to Birgunj. Pawan says that efforts are being made to invite Maithali rapper group ‘Maniya’ for Janakpur and Lahan.
According to Pawan, this one-and-a-half-hour-long program begins with a welcome dance. The audience/listeners are attracted by asking questions and distributing prizes. Then, the winners of the draw, Extreme Energy Drink or Max Tiger Energy Drinks, distribute the tickets for the T-20 World Cup. One winner in each city gets this ticket.
‘This is basically like a street festival. We started it with the intention of reaching places where radio is not available,’ Pawan says about the purpose of the program, ‘But, now the format of the program has changed a bit.’ Earlier, the program was organized in Chaitra early this time, but the cold has bothered us. However, Pawan said that the group is traveling from city to city with a program that warms up the atmosphere even in the cold.
Presenter Mahima says that every year, when she goes to different cities with this program, she has a different experience. ‘So far, we have held programs in two cities. It was a great experience. The crowd in Nepalgunj was very good. We got the same enthusiasm in Dhangadhi too,’ Mahima said.
Currently, there are 17 people in the group, including Mahima and Prajwal. World Nepali and Raja Rajendra have been performing in two cities. While the two winners of Dance Champion Nepal are performing, Mahima's group has been choosing the 'lucky draw'. Mahima says that the program has been attracting attention in every city because of the tickets being given to watch the World Cup to be held in Mumbai on February 8. After Surkhet, 'Radio on Wheels' will now travel to Butwal, Pokhara, Narayangadh, Hetauda, Birgunj, Janakpur, Lahan, Itahari, Birtamod and Dharan, according to Radio Kantipur.
