There is no alternative to elections, the government should create an environment: Nepal

What you should know

Madhav Kumar Nepal, co-coordinator of the Nepali Communist Party, has said that the current government has no option but to hold elections.

In an interview with Kantipur after addressing the party's unity message meeting in Dhankuta, Leader Nepal said that the government should move forward in a way that the election scheduled for Falgun 21 is the centerpiece.

Leader Nepal also drew the government's attention not to be up and down in holding the election on the scheduled date. Leader Nepal said, "The government should focus on systemic reforms in the country and correcting past shortcomings by keeping the upcoming House of Representatives election as the main priority." When asked whether there was any doubt at the people's level whether there would be an election, Leader Nepal insisted that he should not go around saying that there would be no election, but that it was the government's job to create an environment for the election.

"I cannot campaign saying that there would be no election, it is the government's job to create an environment for the election," he said, "The situation of a vacuum in parliament is unacceptable in a democracy, any kind of dictatorship is unacceptable to us, the current government should hold elections and immediately hand over the country to the people's representatives."

He said that the election to the House of Representatives was inevitable as parliament is essential for democratic governance and practice. He clarified that there is no talk of collaboration with any other party for the upcoming House of Representatives elections and that he has no prejudice against anyone. He said, ‘One hand does not clap, two hands are needed to clap.’

He said that his party has not thought about electoral collaboration with the UML but will not rule out anything either. At the program, Nepali Communist Party leader Haribol Gajurel, NCP leader and former Chief Minister of Koshi Province Rajendra Rai, Dhankuta coordinator Kusum Kumari Shrestha ‘Julie’ and others addressed the unity message meeting.

Leader Haribol Gajurel said that they are engaged in a campaign to bring all small and large communist forces together. He said that they should move forward with self-criticism, saying that some issues were not handled properly during the party’s operations in the past. Before the meeting, the NCP had organized a rally at the Dhankuta headquarters.
