The Gurung community is celebrating the Tamu Lhosar festival today, bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new one.

Since Lho means ‘year’ and ‘sar’ means change, the day when the year changes is called ‘Tamu Lhosar’. Tamu Lhosar is celebrated as the New Year by the Gurung community in a grand manner.

Tamu Lhosar festival is related to the rays of the sun. In the Gurung-dominated districts of Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Manang, Kaski, Parbat and other places, this festival is celebrated in Poush as the heat of the sun comes first. After this, it is believed that the heat of the sun comes in the areas inhabited by the Tamang and Sherpa tribes, this festival is celebrated in Magh and Falgun.

Experts say that this festival is also important because the night of Poush 15 is the longest and the nights after it get shorter. The government has declared a public holiday today on the occasion of Tamu Lhosar. On this occasion, the Gurung community is organizing a special program in Tundikhel.

People from the Gurung community participate in the program dressed in traditional and cultural costumes. The program will feature a display of special dishes of the Gurung community. On this occasion, the Lhosar festival has begun in Tundikhel in the capital from Sunday. Thousands of people are participating in the festival.
