Jumli voters waiting for working public representatives

What you should know

Motiram Budha of Patarasi-4 is disappointed that he has not been able to elect a representative to address the demands of the village in any of the elections so far.

Although he has been a voter since the 2048 parliamentary election, he has not been able to get a representative who can change the face of the district. For this reason, he is confused about what kind of representative to choose in the upcoming House of Representatives election on Falgun 21.

‘Many representatives have been elected so far,’ he said, ‘but our roads are still rough. When the springs dry up, the water taps are turned off. The situation of education and health is critical. The sick have to stay in the village because they cannot go to the hospital.’

Lumki Chutkala Kami of Patarasi Rural Municipality, Jumla has been involved in the work of seeking votes with the candidates in every election. But this time there is no glow on her face. She said, ‘The representatives who have won so far have not done the work of the people. They did not pick up the phone when the work was done, they did not understand the condition of the suffering patients when they returned to the village. Instead, they have broken ties with the voters and enjoyed themselves. This time, there will be no work of walking with the candidates and seeking votes.’

The government has scheduled the election of members of the House of Representatives for Falgun 21. But the election fervor is not seen in the villages and settlements of Jumla. Most of the voters are outside the district for business. ‘Even those within the district are not happy that the elections are coming,’ said Chutkala.

In Jumla, candidates are nominated repeatedly in every election, but so far no one has been able to repeat the victory. The reason is that public opinion in Jumla keeps changing. The representatives who have won from Jumla have been sending new faces to every election, saying that they have not worked according to the needs, feelings and demands of the people.

In Jumla, even if the party gives tickets to old faces, there is no history of victory. Voters want to choose new faces according to the new situation. Since every leader has been tested, the leadership that has entered the field once is afraid to rise again. Jagat Bahadur Rokaya, a local of Jumla, said, ‘Not a single people’s representative has been re-elected so far because they cannot address the demands of the people.’

The settlements of Jumla are now deserted. In winter, most Jumlis go down for business. Even those in the villages are not enthusiastic about the elections. Voters are disappointed that the elected MPs have not worked to win the hearts of the voters. ‘First, the party does not field candidates again after understanding the psychology of the people, and the elected MPs do not fulfill their election commitments. Even leaders who become MPs forget the voters after winning the elections, so the people of Jumlis are less satisfied,’ said Rokaya. ‘They have not repaired the houses washed away by the floods. Roads have not been paved. The conditions of education, health, and drinking water have not been improved. Due to lack of employment opportunities, the compulsion to go to the mountains has been the same for years.’ He said that representatives are changed in every election because they do not work and only share dreams.

Rather than going door-to-door and begging according to the demands of the voters, Rokaya said that the people of Jumla want to choose representatives who understand the lifestyle of the people, have a simple lifestyle, work for the people, and can put pressure on the parliament.
