The Constitution of Nepal and the Senior Citizens' Act, 2063 BS have ensured the right to special protection and social security for senior citizens. The Constitution has guaranteed the right to receive health care, a dignified life and support, which provides a strong foundation for their dignified life.

In 2052 BS, the government led by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Adhikari in Nepal had announced to provide an old age allowance of Rs. 100 to senior citizens. Currently, senior citizens receive an old age allowance of Rs. 4,000 per month. About 1.7 million senior citizens have been receiving old-age allowance.

How many senior citizens are there?

The number of senior citizens in Nepal was 856,061 in 2038 BS. By 2048 BS, it had reached 1,073,487. In 2058 BS, it had reached 1,470,379 and in 2068 BS, it had reached 2,469,000. According to the 2068 Census, the number of people aged 60 and above was 2,154,410, while the number of people aged 100 and above was 3,566.

In 2078 BS, the total population of the country reached 29,192,480. 10.2 percent, or 2,977,318, of the total population are senior citizens. There are 1,543,907 female senior citizens.
