Christians are celebrating Christmas Day today to commemorate the birthday of Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity. Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, Israel, on December 25, 2,025 years ago.
Nepal Christian Federation President Sibi Gahatraj said that Jesus Christ, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, gave three main joys. He said that the Christian community celebrates this day as all three days in the belief that he gave salvation, love and peace.
President Gahatraj said that today is celebrated as Love Day because he came to love people, Peace Day because he came to establish peace and Liberation Day because he came to give salvation. While Christmas Day, which is celebrated by many people around the world, is celebrated as a festival in Nepal, the Federation started celebrating it as a festival after 2063 BS, he said.
It is reported that the Federation's Main Festival Committee organized the Christmas Festival 2082 this afternoon. President Gahatraj said that government representatives, officials of concerned bodies, human rights activists and others will be present at the program. A public holiday was declared from 2063 BS to 2074 BS on the occasion of the day.
From 2075 BS to 2077 BS, only Christians were given holidays. From 2078 BS, public holidays have been given to everyone again. Recently, major landmarks in major cities have been decorated with Christmas ‘trees’.
Especially in tourist areas such as Thamel, Bouddha, Pokhara, Sauraha and other cities where tourists come, Christmas is especially popular. According to the Federation, there are currently 3 million Christians and more than 13,000 churches in Nepal.
