What you should know
UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has said that the House of Representatives should be re-established, saying that the government is not creating an environment for elections. Speaking at the inauguration of the 11th National Convention of the UML, Oli said that the dissolution of the House of Representatives is unconstitutional and that the House of Representatives should be re-established.
‘There must be an agreement between the parties to amend the constitution. The constitution must be amended through the parliament. As the Prime Minister, I had shown the constitutional path that the parliament should not be dissolved. However, the country was taken in the opposite direction. A government was formed from outside. An unauthorized person recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives. It was dissolved based on an unconstitutional recommendation,’ Oli said, ‘This is unconstitutional. It is wrong. Sending the representatives elected by the people home means weakening democracy. Dissolution of the House of Representatives is unacceptable. It is our stance that the unconstitutionally dissolved House of Representatives should be restored immediately.’
He said that the government, which has received the mandate to transfer power by holding the elections on Falgun 21, is working towards disrupting the electoral environment rather than creating it. ‘Are preparations for the elections underway now? It is not visible. If there was a government that wanted elections, it would have won the trust of all parties. It showed transparency in decisions. It created a safe environment. It created an environment for the party to participate in the elections. It created an environment of fearlessness. It brought back the weapons of the looted police. It returned the escaped prisoners,' Oli added, 'However, the government is carrying out media trials and threats against political parties, canceling the passports of leaders and imposing restrictions and bans. Does this increase pressure and terror or does it protect the vote? The saying is that elections should be held in a peaceful environment through a democratic system and method. No one would have thought that the UML would run away from the elections because of the shadow of fear, pressure and retaliation. But, is the election happening now? No, the election is not happening. Only talk of the election is happening. To confuse the country. That is why our stance is that the House of Representatives should be re-established.'
