Today is International Mountain Day.

International Mountain Day is being celebrated in various countries around the world today with the aim of raising public awareness about the impact of melting glaciers on mountains and mountain life, the opportunities and challenges of mountain development, and building collaboration to bring about positive change for mountain communities and the environment worldwide.

This day has been celebrated every year on December 11 in most member countries of the United Nations since 2003 at the call of the United Nations. Today, various programs including lectures, exhibitions and other programs related to mountain life, glaciers and the environment are being organized at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome. According to the United Nations, two billion people in the world depend on water flowing from mountain areas. In recent years, mountain environments have been at high risk, and water resources are at risk. Glaciers have melted at a rapid pace. If temperatures continue to rise, other glaciers will disappear. Similarly, more than 15 million people in the world are highly vulnerable to the potential risk of glacier-melting lakes. This day alerts the world community to such risks and challenges and emphasizes cooperation for mountain conservation, sustainable development and a secure future.
