The 77th International Human Rights Day is being celebrated around the world today with the goal of global cooperation and commitment to the protection of human rights. Various programs are being organized in Nepal as well to mark the occasion.

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, President Ram Chandra Poudel, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Sushila Karki, and various political parties have given messages of greetings. This day is celebrated every year in memory of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.

The declaration has ensured equal rights for all without any discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sex, language, opinion, social origin, or birth. In Nepal, this day has been providing additional energy for expanding public awareness, protecting rights, and building a just society.

The International Day of Human Rights Defenders was observed on Tuesday alone. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders 1998, and the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966, to which Nepal is a party, have ensured the right of every person to advocate for his or her own rights as well as the rights of others.

The Constitution of Nepal guarantees the right to freedom of thought and expression, freedom of assembly and freedom to form organizations. The Government of Nepal has also issued the Order on the Protection and Security of Human Rights Activists, 2077. In this context, the day is celebrated.
