The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has banned the sale and distribution of two batches of puffs produced by Khajuri Nepal Pvt. Ltd. Not only that, the department has also directed to recall those already in the market.

The department has also brought puffs from other companies in the market under investigation, said Senior Food Research Officer Dr. Bal Kumari Sharma, spokesperson of the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control.

‘The department has initiated a testing process for puffs produced by other industries,’ said Dr. Sharma. ‘The office has instructed food inspectors as per its process to check whether the puffs are made as per the standards.’

According to Dr. Sharma, after market monitoring and industry collection, the amount of trans fat in Khajuri Nepal Pvt. Ltd. batches B1–3A and B1–5A puffs was found to exceed the maximum limit and was immediately withdrawn from the market without being sold or distributed. According to him, the amount of trans fat in the puffs should be less than 2 percent.

According to the law, if any food item does not meet the prescribed hygiene, quality or standards or is not safe for human consumption, such food item can be immediately withdrawn from the market. There is also a provision to submit the details within 7 days.

The department has also raised questions about whether edible fat was used in the puffs. According to Dr. Sharma, the office is also investigating the type of butter used in making the puffs. Initial investigations have shown that butter used in bakeries was used instead of butter made from milk. The department has said that the puffs with problems should be completely destroyed.

Khajuri's Nepal Pvt. Ltd., on the other hand, has stated that its product is not completely harmful and that it is withdrawing the puffs from the market immediately after the Food Technology and Quality Control Department pointed out some quality-related deficiencies in two batches of puffs. The company has claimed that such errors sometimes occur worldwide during production and that the products in the market, except for the mentioned batches B1–3A and B1–5A, are of high quality. Khajuri's Nepal has been producing various food items for three decades.
