Today is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. The aim of the day is to raise global awareness against modern forms of slavery, including human trafficking, forced labor, sexual exploitation, child labor, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children into armed conflict.
This day is celebrated every year to commemorate the day when the United Nations passed a General Assembly resolution on the suppression of human trafficking and sexual exploitation on December 2, 1949. According to the United Nations, even today, 50 million people around the world are at risk of modern slavery. Most of these are women and children forced into forced labor.
Due to racial discrimination, poverty, social exclusion and unequal treatment, some communities are still at serious risk of exploitation. Migrant and vulnerable workers have been found to be forced into various economic exploitations, from domestic work, construction, agriculture, the garment industry to the sex sector.
The International Labor Organization has emphasized the need for cooperation between governments, civil society and communities to end slavery and modern exploitation, emphasizing the rescue, rehabilitation, justice and long-term protection of victims.
