Former President Bhandari: Former Prime Minister Oli should take responsibility for the repression of the Gen-G movement

What you should know

Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that those who led the then government should take responsibility for the repression of the Gen-G movement on Bhadra 23 and the subsequent violent incidents.

Speaking on Kantipur Television's weekly program Fireside , Bhandari said that the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's statement that he had no foreknowledge of the movement and that even the security apparatus had not given him sufficient information was his own weakness. She said, 'Whoever becomes the Prime Minister should take responsibility for his entire term.' '

When asked if the former Prime Minister believed in the rule of law or the rule of law, she did not give a clear answer. But she clarified that the then leadership should answer on this issue.

Bhandari also expressed suspicion that the arson, vandalism and looting incident on the 24th may have been sponsored. She argued that such a destruction could not have happened without long-term preparation and said that a serious investigation should be conducted into it. She said, 'That tragic incident on the 23rd was bound to cause anger towards the leadership.' But we need to study a little to see if it was sponsored.'

She said that the houses of CPN-UML and Congress leaders were vandalized, arsonized and looted that day and that it should also be investigated. She said, 'This should be studied very carefully. So that this does not happen again, it should be brought under the ambit of the law.' She said that she would not look at this incident with suspicion towards anyone and said that the incident was not just a sudden accident. She suspected that the incident may have happened after many days of preparation and said, 'It cannot be considered as a sudden incident.'

Bhandari also shared some new facts about the UML general convention. She said that there was a polite agreement during the ninth general convention to make CPN-UML senior vice-president Ishwor Pokharel the president after KP Oli, and she also claimed that Oli had agreed at that time to make Pokharel, the candidate for president in the 11th general convention, the president after him. Speaking on Fireside, former President Bhandari also said that Ishwor Pokharel has not yet asked her for help in becoming the chairperson.

She said that she is aware of his aspirations for leadership, saying, 'So far, he has not openly said that he should cooperate with me.' The full interview with former President Bhandari will be broadcast on Fireside on Sunday at 9 pm. The program can also be watched on Kantipur TV's YouTube channel and Kantipur TV app.
