A special ceremony is being organized today at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Darba under the chief guestship of Prime Minister Sushila Karki. The government had formally announced the contribution-based social security scheme on 2075 Mangsir 11 to implement the fundamental right to social security as enshrined in the Constitution of Nepal.
The social security scheme is being implemented under the leadership of the Fund established with the objective of ensuring the right to contribution-based social security of workers and providing social security to contributors. The Fund's programs are aimed at reducing economic and social risks by including all workers in this scheme, embodying the concept of universal social security, and ensuring the constitutional system of contribution-based social security, informed Executive Director Kabiraj Adhikari.
‘Expanding scope, workers benefiting’
The fund is bringing workers in the formal sector, foreign employment, informal and self-employed sectors, as well as workers in the formal sector, into the ambit of social security. As of Wednesday, the fund has covered 2.65 billion citizens under the umbrella of social security based on contributions. Of these, 649,511 are in the formal sector, 1996,579 are in foreign employment, 799 are in the informal sector and 582 are in the self-employed sector.
The fund is operating drug treatment, health and maternity, accident disability, dependent family security and old age security schemes for workers. The executive director, Adhikari, said that workers and their families have been receiving various facilities and concessions from these schemes. So far, Rs 95.68 billion has been collected in the fund. 253,143 workers have received claims of Rs 17.72 billion for various facilities. The fund has been providing benefits to contributors, including interest on savings, monthly pension after a certain period, home loans, educational loans, and more, in addition to health benefits.
