Prime Minister and Tribhuvan University Chancellor Sushila Karki has said that it is not possible for the Prime Minister to remain the Chancellor of each university. Addressing the Tribhuvan University Assembly meeting on Wednesday, she said that the Prime Minister should be removed from the position of the Chancellor of the university.

She said that Education, Science and Technology Minister Mahabir Pun is working for that. ‘The Prime Minister is the Chancellor of 17 universities. It is not possible for the Prime Minister to be the Chancellor of every university. It is not right to make a political person the Chancellor,’ she said. Prime Minister Karki said that the university assembly should select the Chancellor. ‘The Prime Minister should not walk around carrying the burden/responsibility of the Chancellor. You should water the plant when it is just planted. It will grow on its own,’ she said.

Prime Minister Karki argued that even though the Prime Minister has been the Chancellor so far, it is no longer necessary. ‘The government should look after the university. But it should not interfere in making policies, rules and regulations,’ she said. ‘The policy and program that should have been passed in Ashar has not been passed yet because of the political person.’

The TU Assembly had passed the policy and program for the fiscal year 2082/083. Prime Minister Karki suggested that the university should also think about self-earning. 'We should not always rely on the government.' The university can also earn by designing educational programs accordingly. Teachers and students can earn money together in the university,' she said.
