The 16-day international campaign against violence against women began on Tuesday. On the occasion, the Women's Rehabilitation Center (WRC) has released an annual book, 'Anveshi 2082', which contains statistics on violence against women.
The publication was jointly made public at a program held at the National Human Rights Commission hall by Commission member Lily Thapa, National Dalit Commission member Mina Devi Sob, founding chair and patron of OREC Renu Adhikari, and chair of the NGO Federation of Nepal Arjun Bhattarai.
OREC has been collecting data on incidents of violence against women for the past 17 years and analyzing them in a segmented manner and publishing it every year. According to the details made public by the organization, this publication presents real-life stories of violence against women and fact-based research reports, informed the founding officer of OREC.
'At that time, the government did not keep statistics either. We had started collecting and analyzing data on the number of incidents of violence against women throughout the year. This publication is still being published annually,' she said.
The book includes the number and form of violence, the immediate and long-term effects of violence, groups at higher risk, and the obstacles women face in seeking support. Similarly, a detailed analysis has been made of how judicial, health and other service providers respond when women victims contact them for support.
Participants in the program emphasized the need for evidence-based policies, increased sensitivity among service providers and victim-centered support systems to reduce violence against women.
The book analyzes 1,279 incidents of violence that occurred in the fiscal year 2081/082. The highest violence was seen in Karnali Province, followed by Koshi Province, which also has the highest rate of violence. 72 percent of the total incidents are domestic violence incidents.
