What you should know

Nepali Communist Party leader Barshaman Pun has said that Nepal's peace process is exemplary and original for the world.

Pun, who was speaking at an interaction organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Tribhuvan University in the capital on Friday, referring to the day the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed (5 Mangsir, 2063), said that Nepal's experience in the peace process would be useful for conflict management around the world.

Discussing that the main causes of conflict are class, ethnic, regional, gender and cultural differences, Pun mentioned that efforts have been made to end those differences through the constitution. 'The causes of conflict in Nepal are also original and we have tried to find solutions in an original way. With the changing roles of the conflicting parties, even the forces that were facing each other in the conflict have come to a situation where they have to come together to fight the establishment side at that time,' Pun said. 'We also took the help of international agencies for conflict resolution. But, basically, we took it forward in our own originality. Our original experience is now being used for conflict management around the world.'

He said that the backward classes, regions and marginalized communities were included in the mainstream of opinion through state restructuring as per the then CPN-Maoist agenda. ‘Yesterday, there was open discrimination and untouchability against Dalits. Today, it is not only punishable, but the presence of that community in state bodies is guaranteed. More than 27 percent of women are present in the civil service. 25 percent of women have become property owners,’ Pun said, ‘The resources of the state, which were limited only to Kathmandu, have directly reached the backward regions like Madhesh, Karnali and Sudurpaschim through federalism. In our proposal, these things have been ensured not only by the consensus of all political forces, but also by the general public through the Constituent Assembly. The backward communities and regions have been included in the mainstreaming of the state.’

Pun argued that the unbalanced development and resource distribution process centered on Kathmandu after the state restructuring was justified. In a separate context, Pun noted that there has been a significant change in the form, causes, and effects of conflict on the global political stage in recent times, and that its aftermath has been seen in Nepal.
