The Election Commission has published the schedule for the House of Representatives elections to be held on 21 Falgun on Sunday. The schedule for candidacy nominations, withdrawal of candidacies, and protest against claims for direct and proportional elections has been made public.
The direct candidacy nomination registration is scheduled for 6th Magh. The list of candidates will be published on the same day between 5 pm and 7 pm. On 7th Magh, the time has been set for filing complaints against the candidates from 10 am to 3 pm. After investigating the complaints, the list of candidates will be published on 8th Magh from 5 pm to 7 pm. The time has been set for withdrawing the name from the candidacy from 9th Magh from 10 am to 1 pm. The final list of candidates will be published and election symbols will be provided by 3 pm on the same day.
The Commission has mentioned that the election program for the proportional representation will start from 20th Mangsir. Parties wishing to participate in the proportional representation election system will have to submit an application to the Commission between 21-23 Mangsir. The list of parties will be published on 24th Mangsir. Parties should submit the closed list of candidates for the proportional representation on 13th and 14th Poush from 10 am to 4 pm. After completing the process of name correction, objections, and withdrawal of names, the final closed list for proportional representation will be published on 20th Magh.
Similarly, voting has been scheduled for 11th Magh for the 19 seats of the National Assembly that will be vacant on 20th Falgun. The commission has also made its election program public. The voter list will be published on 19th Poush. The final voter list will be published on 22nd Poush after investigating the claims, objections, and complaints against voters. The nomination of candidates will be registered from 10 am to 3 pm on 23rd Poush.
On 24th Poush, complaints against candidates will be filed, on 27th Poush, candidates will withdraw their names, and then the final list will be published. On 28th Poush, candidates will receive their election symbols. Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai informed that the commission meeting held on Sunday approved the election program for the House of Representatives and the National Assembly.
The term of office of members of the National Assembly is 6 years. The term of office of one-third of the members expires every two years. There is a legal provision that elections should be held 35 days before the end of the term for the vacant positions. Accordingly, the elections are being held on 11 Magh. Provincial Assembly members and rural municipality chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, and municipal mayors and deputy mayors vote to elect members of the National Assembly. According to the commission, there are a total of 2,054 voters, including 549 from the 7 provincial assemblies and 1,505 from the local level.
