Former provincial chief Rajesh Ahiraj reaches Supreme Court, demands release from detention

Former Madhesh Province Chief Rajesh Ahiraj, who is in custody on charges of rape, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court. He filed 73 petitions on 23 Kartik, demanding his release.

A hearing has been scheduled for Friday in a bench of Justices Kumar Regmi and Shrikant Poudel on Ahiraj's petition. He was sent to remand for trial by the Kathmandu District Court. He had initially approached the Patan High Court against this.

The High Court had upheld the District Court's order to send Rajesh Jha alias Ahiraj to remand for trial on 12 Bhadra 2082. A bench of Patan High Court Chief Justice Lal Bahadur Kunwar and Khadanand Tiwari had upheld the District Court's order to send him to remand. He has approached the Supreme Court against the orders of the district and the high court.

A bench of Kathmandu District Court Judge Pitambar Sharma had issued an order to send him to remand for trial on 14 Shrawan. He was then sent to Dillibazaar Jail. After being sent to remand by the district, Ahiraj approached the High Court with a petition of Berit. A woman had filed a case against him on charges of rape.

Jha, who was arrested on 4th Shrawan, was charged with rape within 9 days by the Government Attorney's Office, Kathmandu, based on the police investigation report.

Ahiraj was accused of raping him on 4th Jestha 2081 at his own residence in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu. Ahiraj, in turn, filed a case against the girl who had filed a rape complaint against him. He was the provincial chief of Madhesh Province.
