The government has started printing driver's licenses using its own printing machines. The Security Printing Center under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has started printing the licenses from today.
Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel inaugurated the printing from the machine at the center in Banepa, Kavre. Minister for Communications Jagdish Kharel said that despite legal complications and various difficulties, the printing of licenses has been started by making necessary arrangements. He said, 'The machines under the Security Printing Center had been stagnant for years.
All the machines and spare parts were dusty. The place itself was like a ruin. We have started printing by shaking off the dust.' According to him, the center's machine can do many things including national identity cards, passports, red-letter documents, various stickers, postage stamps, etc. Minister for Communications Kharel said, 'There is a situation where 2.8 million driving licenses need to be printed.' Printing of licenses, passports, national identity cards, etc. had always been contracted to foreign companies.
Minister for Communications Kharel said that printing was started after making policy reforms in a situation where printing could not be done despite having the infrastructure and resources. Devraj Dhungana, Executive Director of the Security Printing Center, informed that printing has begun after resolving various legal and technical issues. The work has started from today as per the agreement for printing 1.2 million copies in the first phase. The center has stated that initially 500 copies will be printed daily and its quantity will be increased.
According to Executive Director Dhungana, citizenship, excise stickers, postage stamps, red papers and visa stickers can be printed from today. Nearly Rs. 3 billion has been invested in the Security Printing Center so far.
