Advanced level of support is necessary for developing countries: President Poudel

President Ram Chandra Poudel has said that developing countries need resources as well as technical knowledge and skills, and for that, an advanced level of support based on unity, justice, and shared responsibility is necessary.

He expressed this view while addressing the second World Social Development Summit that began in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, according to his secretariat. 'Developing countries need not only resources but also technical knowledge and skills, a fair global trading system, implementation of development assistance commitments, climate finance, technology transfer and investment,' President Poudel said.

He said that ensuring access to quality education, health services and social security for all is his priority. 'At the heart of our development efforts is inclusive governance and the empowerment of marginalized communities such as women, youth, indigenous peoples, Dalits, persons with disabilities, etc. Ensuring access to quality education, health services and social security for all is our priority,' President Poudel said.

He said that Nepal has taken inclusion, justice and social security as the cornerstones of social development. Stating that Nepal's constitution has assimilated the key principles of the Copenhagen Declaration and that they envision a society where every citizen can live with equal rights, equal opportunities and dignity, President Poudel said that Nepal has achieved remarkable achievements due to political determination and collective efforts.

Poverty has been halved since 1995, progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals is higher than the world average, and more than 95 percent of Nepalis use clean energy, said President Poudel. 'Gender equality has increased in all sectors including education, maternal and child mortality rates have significantly decreased, around ninety social security programs currently operating in Nepal have been supporting our elderly, women, children and people with disabilities, our constitution has ensured representation of women, Dalits, indigenous peoples and other marginalized groups,' he said.

During his address, President Poudel said that similar to the rise brought by the young generation in favor of good governance in some countries of the world, demonstrations in the name of Genji were held in Nepal on Bhadra 23 and 24, but they  He mentioned that the election of the House of Representatives members has been announced on Falgun 21 after the country landed safely while protecting the constitution and democratic system. He believes that the election will provide Nepal with a political outlet and move forward on the path of good governance, development and prosperity.

'History has taught us that inclusiveness and shared prosperity are the cornerstones of sustainable peace, progress and human dignity. Whatever we do today is what will build the future. Therefore, let us prepare a structure for the future that ensures socio-economic development for all,' President Poudel said.

He said that Nepal is at a crucial juncture in history and this is an important time to take concrete and coordinated action at the global level to fulfill the expectations of the people. 'With the rapid pace and level of access to information among the common people, the expectations of the people of the least developed and developing countries have also risen. They immediately want quality life, education, health and decent employment, but the reality is different due to limited resources and the limited capacity of institutions,' President Poudel said.

Based on the principles of a just, inclusive and equitable world and social development, informing about climate change and its adverse impact on Nepali lives, he said that despite contributing insignificantly to carbon emissions, Nepal is suffering the worst effects of climate change. 'This is not our fault, the disproportionate impact of climate change has also created problems in Nepal's socio-economic development journey. In this context, global solidarity, support and cooperation play an important role in advancing the development efforts of countries,' President Poudel said.

President Poudel expressed confidence that the international community would take concrete steps to support the development efforts of developing countries, especially the least developed countries, and said that the summit would be meaningful for countries like Nepal. 'I believe that the Doha Declaration will guide our future steps,' he said. He stressed the need to take concrete and coordinated steps after the summit and to review priorities and mobilize resources accordingly.

Recalling that the Copenhagen Declaration issued thirty years ago was a historic moment in the collective journey towards a just, inclusive and equitable world, he said that through the declaration, we have included the principles of social development in the global agenda and have committed to placing the rights, dignity and well-being of the people at the center of  all-round development efforts.

'Since the issuance of the Copenhagen Declaration, we have made significant progress, poverty has been reduced, access to education and health services has expanded, social security has been strengthened, women's participation and leadership have increased, life expectancy has increased, and maternal and child mortality rates have decreased,' said President Poudel. Stating that these achievements made by Nepal are not sufficient, he said that our aspiration to build a just, equality-based and inclusive society is yet to be fulfilled. President Poudel noted that the Doha Declaration came as a shared commitment to building a more just, inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world, and that the Doha Declaration called on all countries to embody the promise of a shared future based on equality, dignity, and opportunity.
