The BP Highway, which had been blocked for three days due to floods and landslides, has resumed operations. The highway was blocked due to landslides and mudslides at various places on the Chowkidanda-Nepalthok road section towards Kavrepalanchok.
The highway has been brought into operation since this morning by removing the obstruction and creating a 'diversion' at the place where the Ledo river flowed, said Divisional Senior Engineer Suman Yogesh, Chief of the Divisional Road Office, Bhaktapur. According to him, the highway was brought into operation after creating a 50-meter diversion at Charsayabesi, Roshi Rural Municipality-8, Kavrepalanchok.
Engineer Yogesh said that there were some problems in removing the diversion and obstruction due to dry landslides. Similarly, he said that the obstruction could not be removed on Saturday as dry landslides were falling in the Roshi-12 Mamti area. 'The highway has been brought into operation after removing the obstruction after the dry landslides stopped,' he said.
Due to incessant rains since Kartik 13, the Chowkidanda-Nepalthok road was completely blocked due to landslides with rocks and mud on various sections of the highway. Engineer Yogesh informed that traffic operations have been suspended since Thursday night due to continuous dry landslides from above the road.
According to him, due to incessant rains since Thursday, various parts of the highway were blocked due to landslides with rocks and mud in places including Chowkidanda, Biruwadanda, Dalabesi, Narke, Charsayabesi, Ghumaune and others. Earlier, vehicle operations were repeatedly banned on the highway due to the risk of monsoon.
Last year's Asoj floods and landslides washed away eight kilometers of the road from Chowkidanda in Kavrepalanchok to Barkhekhola in Sindhuli along the BP Highway. "After the road was washed away, a temporary road was brought into operation on the river, allowing traffic to operate in one direction and in two directions," he said.
The floods and landslides caused the most damage to various parts of the third section, from Khurkot in Sindhuli to Nepalthok, and the fourth section, from Nepalthok to Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchok, out of the total 160 km of the highway.
The office has stated that the contract process has been moved forward in four sections for the permanent construction of the damaged highway. Thousands of vehicles travel on the highway, which is a short distance connecting eastern Nepal, every day.
