Bioethics Day has been celebrated on October 19, 2025, with various competitive programs being held in various medical colleges of Nepal, embracing the slogan of protecting the environment, ecology, and biodiversity.
Bioethics Day 2025 is being celebrated this year, highlighting the fact that the protection of the environment, biosphere and biodiversity is essential for human existence, health and development. Various awareness-raising programs organized by the Bio-Ethics Nepal Unit concluded on October 31 at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.
The program, chaired by the Head of the Nepal Unit and the coordinator of this program for Nepal, Prof. Dr. Dhanratna Shakya, was conducted by Anisha Giri and Christina Rai of the student faculty. In the keynote speech at the program, the Head of the Nepal Unit, Prof. Dr. Dhanratna Shakya, gave an introductory speech about the unit and this principle and said that this important 17th principle of bioethics is essential for human existence, health and development, and everyone should play their role and advocate for it. Nepal Unit member Prof. Dr. Sarun Koirala, Medical Education, Dr. Ashok Air highlighted dentistry, Khemchand Subedi highlighted civic and legal aspects. Sameep Regmi of the student faculty gave a seminar presentation on this year's slogan. This year, Surja Shakya won first, Sampada Dhimal second and Sudin Bhusal third in the photography competition judged by Prof. Dr. Raviram Shrestha, Prof. Dr. Sarun Koirala and Dr. Ashok Air. Ujjwal Thakur and Surja Shakya, Prof. Dr. Dhanratna Shakya and Prof. Dr. Raviram Shrestha won the art poster, judged by Prof. Dr. Sarun Koirala and Dr. Ashok Air. Prashant Sapkota and Jeevan Bhujel won the scientific poster, judged by Prof. Dr. Dhanratna Shakya, Prof. Dr. Sarun Koirala and Dr. Kishor Gurung won the poetry competition.
The coordinator of the program, Nepal Unit and Head of the Institute's Department of Mental Diseases, Prof. Dr. Dhanratna Shakya, expressed the view that such opportunities and programs for discussion, study, brainstorming and reflection on bioethics should be regular and expanded. Nepal joined the Bioethics Group, which has a network all over the world, in 2013. Since 2016, World Bioethics Day has been celebrated on October 19. UNESCO's Bioethics Chair has emphasized the teaching, training and research of ethics in education, service and research in the fields of medicine, health and life sciences.
