Children used in Maitighar protest, wooden weapons found

What you should know

A gun-shaped wooden object was found in the possession of one of the 76 people arrested by the police for protesting at Maitighar in Kathmandu on Friday without permission.

According to SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, after 5 pieces of wood resembling a gun were recovered from a youth named Bhim Kumar Rai, he was kept for further investigation and 75 others were released. The police have taken Dinesh Khanal, who is said to be the organizer of the demonstration, into custody. SP Bhattarai said that 11 children were among those arrested.

The police had taken them into custody after they organized a program in the name of an organization called Gen-G United Parivartan without obtaining permission. SP Bhattarai said that parents also need to be aware of such programs using children when the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked to discuss the Gen-G demonstration and demands.

‘As it was attempted to demonstrate without the permission of the local administration and possible clashes between other Gen-G groups would endanger the safety of the protesters, they were taken into custody for questioning and released in the evening,’ he said. ‘This group had been demonstrating for two days.’ Of those taken into custody today, 40 were men and 36 were women. However, Madan Karki, leader of Gen-G United Parivartan, said that they did not get permission from the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, to demonstrate freely.

The group, which participated in the Maitighar, had demonstrated saying that Gen-G should be united and that Gen-G's main demands, including zero corruption, a direct electoral system, and accountable politics, had not been met.
