Nepal Sambat 1146 is being celebrated today with various programs organized across the country. This Sambat is celebrated as the Newar New Year by the Newar community.

National figure Shankhadhar Sahakhwa started Nepal Sambat by waiving the debts of the poor people in 937 BS (880 AD). Nepal Sambat was recognized as the national Sambat until the reign of Prithvi Narayan Shah, says former Vice-Chancellor of Lumbini Buddhist University Dr. Triratna Manandhar.

'Nepal Sambat, which began during the reign of King Raghavdev of the Lichchhavi period, was in use as the original Sambat until the reign of Prithvi Narayan Shah. Before the Lichchhavi period, Shaka Sambat was in use. Since it is named after the country, Nepal is the original Sambat,' he said.

A campaign has been launched for Nepal Sambat to be recognized as a national Sambat since the establishment of democracy in 2007 BS. Nepal Sambat is specially celebrated as the New Year by the Newar community living in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Banepa, Dhulikhel, Bahrabise, Dolakha Bhimeshwor and other areas.

Highly appreciating the work of providing an excellent model of social service by releasing the debts of the poor and also implementing the original Sambat in Nepal, the then Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai declared Saakhwa a national figure on New Year's Day 2056 BS.

In 2065 BS, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal announced that Nepal Sambat would receive national recognition. There is also a tradition in Kathmandu of closing the book account on the day of Kartik Krishna Aunsi and starting a new book account on the day of the new year, i.e. Kartik Shukla Pratipada.
