The process of terminating 50 more sick contracts for road and bridge construction that have been lying idle for years without work being done has begun. The Pushpalal (Mid-Hill) Highway under the Department of Roads, the Federal Road Supervision and Monitoring Office Kathmandu, Itahari, Janakpur, Pokhara and the Road Division Offices under Surkhet have taken forward the process of terminating 50 sick contracts.

The process of terminating a sick contract was taken forward on Friday, 17 and Saturday.

The Road Division Office, Janakpur, has issued a public notice on Sunday asking why not terminate 21 contracts, Kathmandu, seven, Okhaldhunga and Achham divisions five each, Palpa and Damauli four each, and Dhankuta, Pokhara, Mid-Hill and Gorkha road projects one each, 50 contracts.

Urban Development Minister Kulman Ghising had directed subordinate bodies to terminate sick contracts to end the trend of taking contracts but not working and leaving projects stranded. 258 contracts are sick under the road.

It has been mentioned that the construction has been incomplete and stranded due to repeated extensions of the contract and plan and lack of interest in completing the construction work even within the specified period, and the construction entrepreneurs have been physically present at the work site for a long time, fundamentally violating the contract.

It is stated that the construction contractor has violated the contract agreement by not showing any interest in completing the construction despite written and verbal requests and information on various dates.

A public call has been made to the authorized person to appear at the office with a revised work schedule that can be completed within 15 days of the publication of the notice, a reliable plan for resource mobilization, a commitment to complete the work, and an explanation with factual evidence if there is any reasonable reason not to break the contract.

If the contractor does not show readiness to start work within that period, the contract agreement will be terminated and blacklisted as per the provisions of the Public Procurement Act, and action will be taken to recover the performance guarantee, deposit amount, advance guarantee and 10 percent interest on the advance amount, as well as the remaining expenses incurred for the work as government dues.
